So can a bookkeeper call themselves an accountant?
Well, actually they can. In Australia, there is no legal protection over the term accountant. Unlike the term solicitor or lawyer, which has legislative protection over it, there is no similar protection on accountant. And that means that pretty much anyone without a degree or with can call themselves an accountant.
But the important thing to note is that only licensed tax agents can charge a fee for preparing a tax return. So whilst anyone can call themselves an accountant, only a licensed tax agent can lodge your tax return.
